Trimmer is a control panel that allows you to control the inclusion of fonts and of the LaserPrep header in a PostScript file when using the LaserWriter 7.0 driver. Trimmer is only active when printing to a file and does not affect the behavior of the LaserWriter driver when directly connected to a printer. To use trimmer drag it to your System Folder and reboot. Users running 6.0 please see the instructions at the end of the document.
As shown above the control panel will show you a list of all of the fonts that the LaserWriter driver knows about. You can select from the scrolling list all of the fonts that you want Trimmer to include in your file and those you don’t. For example, in the above case Trimmer has been configured to only permit the downloading of Lubalin, Monaco, New York, and Optima. All of the other fonts will not be included in the PostScript file (i.e., NCS and Palatino). The above example also shows the option for the LaserPrep header checked.
Other features of Trimmer included the icons at the left of the font names. These icons represent the type of font that the LaserWriter driver would include WHEN PRINTING TO A FILE. In the above case Lubalin, Monaco, New York, and Palatino are all TrueType fonts; NCS is a bitmap font; and Optima is a PostScript downloadable font file (a.k.a. Type 1). The icons can also serve as a guideline for knowing what font the LaserWriter driver will use when directly connected to a printer. If the printer does not have the font in question (either downloaded or in ROM) then the type shown by Trimmer will be used.
Trimmer works by patching the LaserWriter driver font downloading mechanism. When Trimmer finds out that the driver is trying to use a font that the user said was not to be downloaded, it substitutes the PostScript comment ‘%%IncludeFont: font-name’. If the ‘include LaserPrep’ checkbox is unchecked then Trimmer replaces the LaserPrep with a ‘%%IncludeProcSet: "(Apple md)" 71 0’ PostScript comments. These comments should make some spoolers content.
Using under System 6.0
---------------------
Trimmer will run under 6.0 if used in conjunction with the LaserWriter 7.0 driver. Using Trimmer with earlier version of the driver is harmless but will not work.
